Mini Glo-Ball S

The simple concept behind the Glo-ball family of lights is to obtain the maximum diffusion of light, this is achieved by the use of hand-blown, etched white opaline glass. The form: a flattened globe appears, like the moon, as a flat disc when illuminated.

IC LIGHTS S

This collection explores balance. There is a series of lights: table lights, wall lights, ceiling pendants and ceiling mounted lights which take as their basic form a sphere that is perfectly balanced on the edge of a rod. I came across an online video clip of a contact juggler. He was spinning a set of spheres, moving them around on his arms and edge of his fingers. And as I got mesmerized by the magic of his skill, suddenly the spheres look perfectly still. I wanted to capture that exact moment. This was my starting point. The initials IC come from the codes that English police use to define the perceived ethnicity of a person they stop in the street when reporting back to the station. IC1 means white person or Northern European type, IC2 means Mediterranean European/Hispanic, IC3 indicates an African/Afro-Caribbean person, and so on, so this is a playful story to define the different designs. Cicatrices De Luxe

"Design must become ordinary, while maintaining a sense of the elite - a slight 19th century flavor. Tomorrow the concept of design will disappear; it will be completely integrated into daily life. With the end of the 20th century and the ploriferation of cheap plastic chairs, why not give up on the concept of design and move on to something else?... It’s important to understand that freedom means adopting the style of tomorrow and recognizing the differences… I don’t like global thinking, so I’ll talk about the opposite of design… then know-how, the blowing of glass, the luxury… Luxury scars (Cicatrices de luxe) is a play on words which evolves around the idea of engraving as a scar, but also of a luxury that leaves an indelible mark. Luxury is not free… luxury is not innocent… luxury is surrounded by scars; knowing it is even more perverse, better to be aware of it - for the pleasure!.” Philippe Starck

Chasen

"Chasen takes its inspiration from an ancient oriental instrument, the traditional bamboo whip used during the tea ceremony, whose delicate filaments continue to change shape.” Patricia Urquiola

Can Can

A lamp with a dual personality, Can Can’s clean, linear shape acts as the container for a sophisticated decorative effect. Like many other creations by Marcel Wanders in which the designer melds together simple, classic forms and features or decorations that draw on tradition, in this suspension lamp too he unites an essential exterior silhouette with a lighting ‘effect’ that is as delicate as it is unexpected. From a distance, Can Can introduces itself as a lamp with a stern design that unexpectedly, when seen close up, reveals a floral decoration that filters the light as it is diffused. Delicate and unpredictable, the beam is broken by the polycarbonate decorative flourish to create an ever changing fabric of light. Achieving a perfect balance between simplicity and refinement - constant features in Wanders’ work - Can Can adds an unexpected and sophisticated note to our everyday settings.

AIM

"The general idea underpinning this project is to offer a lamp which can be infinitely adjusted to satisfy all lighting needs. We have developed a new type of lamp that is naturally positioned in space - like a plant - with long cables providing maximum freedom to adjust the direction and height of the light source. This object is the industrial version of the ‘Liane’ lamp presented at the Kreo gallery in Paris in 2010.” R. & E. Bouroullec

Toio

Toio is the humorous translation coined by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for the English word toy, with that special linguistic divertissement that lets them appropriate a foreign word and make it familiar and meaningful. And Toio, with its striking assemblage of a special car headlight imported from the United States that same year (1962), fishing rod running rings and shiny red lacquer, really does have the magic of a toy for the adult world.

Spun Light F

"The essence of the Spun Light is simplicity. Modern manufacturing technology embracing elegance and craftsmanship. Fabricated and machined from aluminium and made to high specification. It is inspired by dynamic fluid aesthetics. The lights are bold and sleek using colour and form to create a contemporary classic.” Sebastian Wrong

Shade

Shade redefined the word lampshade and its fixed perspective. An effortless way to have warm ambience light with a touch of surrealism. The magic of Shade is achieved by avoiding the conventional way of using mains power from the ceiling, and with it intrusive fittings and flex. Instead, power derives from an LED floor fitting shining an uplight into the paper shade, which in turn is suspended from the ceiling with next-to-invisible, capillary-thin wires. Paul Cocksedge adds: "Shade has an almost dream-like mystery. It utilizes floor and ceiling both, but appears unconnected to either...!"

BIBLIOTHEQUE NATIONALE

"A magic bookcase where the books take flight towards the light” Philippe Starck Standing lamp is also perfect as a bookshelf with its stainless steel shelves placed beside the central stem. Like the hi-tech product it is, Bibliotheque Nationale is fitted with a USB port, placed on the base, for recharging the most common brands of smartphone.

Arco

"We were thinking about a lamp that shines light onto a table. They already existed, but you had to walk round them. To leave enough space around the table, the base had to be at least two meters away. Which was how the idea for Arco came into being. We wanted to make it with commercially available parts and we found that curved steel angle iron worked perfectly well. Then there was the problem of the counterweight: a heavy weight was needed to support it all. Our first thought was concrete, but then we chose marble because the same weight took up less space, and also because we could obtain a better finish for a lower cost. In Arco nothing is decorative: even the beveled corners on the base have a function, which is not to hurt us; even the hole isn’t a flight of fantasy, but to make it easier to lift the base.” Achille Castiglioni (interview for Ottagono, 1970)

"Wan” is a Japanese word for bowl. The most essential of all containers, in its many forms and materials, in every cultures and historical periods, is perhaps the object of mankind. Wan is a bowl of light.

Tight Light

Things small and large often have deep affinities. This well-known axiom has been fascinating us for centuries, so much so that two of the creations by Piero Lissoni, Long Light and Tight Light, focus on this analogy between the tiny on one hand and the grandeur of the universe on the other. Similar in terms of their purity and minimalism, and sharing the coolness of the aluminium from which they are made, these sconce lights differ in terms of their light diffusion. Eliminating all frills and unnecessary decorations, the designer has created discrete sources of light that modulate the walls with their presence.

Smithfield C

"There’s a market in London called Smithfield and these lamps take their inspiration from a certain typology of metal lamp shade which used to hang in these kind of situations. I’ve always liked the industrial and functional character of these lights, and wanted to make a project out of them, looking for some way of making use of their efficiency in delivering light, and the forms themselves which are so much a part of the good atmosphere of industrial spaces”. Jasper Morrison

Skygarden Recessed

"In my previous house I had a fabulous antique-decorated plaster ceiling. I called it my Skygarden. it always looked good even without me having green fingers or taking care of it very well. It didn’t need water or sunlight but lived only on the warm rays of the electric light underneath it. I loved it so much that when time I moved house I couldn`t leave it. I had to find a way to take it to my new home. I took my tools and removed it from the ceiling. This fabulous piece of history is now secretly hidden in a minimalist architectural sphere in the heart of my new home where I can enjoy it with friends. If you tell don’t tell anyone, you can enjoy it with me.” Marcel Wanders

Pochette

"Pochette is a wall bracket that features plenty of shiny metal. Its sinous lines and brilliant surfaces alter our visual perception of the object itself, making the luminous source a pleasant surprise.”

All Light

"All Light compels light to be a pure and simple geometric shape: it is a luminous solid body that becomes a graphic sign. The intent of this project was to cretae a luminous shape that could contain as well as expand its light source, entrusting the latter with the task of building the object’s image.” Rodolfo Dordoni

Tatou T1

"Tatou began life as a luminaire that crosses a traditional dome style with a surface that is interpreted through a creative language to screen and let the light filter through from inside. The first prototypes were suspension models, but they immediately bred into a family. Development in various sizes and situations in the domestic environment came naturally. The process began by looking for different ways to reconstruct membranes, conceived like Japanese armour: a series of metal buckles cleverly united by tapes with a powerful emotional value. There was then a process of simplification into overlapping, perforated, vertical bands riveted together. We translated the design into a mass production process by transitioning to injection moulding. The overlapping of these bands has been crystallised in three-dimensional leather, a variable section mould and by the geometric pattern. With Flos, the challenge was to obtain a mass produced product, while retaining strong artisan connotations. Tatou is French for armadillo: the mammal famous for its structure made up of plates of bone covered with a protective layer of horn. ‘Tatou’ has an emotional sound to it, which I think is consistent with the emotional function of this object.” Patricia Urquiola

Piani

"The Piani collection is made up of a flat base and a flat top. The base is either a tray so that objects can be displayed in a triangular beam of light as if they were on stage. Piani comes in plastic as well as in oak wood and basalt stone, so that different sensual experiences are suggested ”. R. & E. Bouroullec

Noce T

"Natural light comes from the sky. Given that electric light is artificial, it should come from the ground." This is how Achille Castiglioni introduced Noce, a sort of luminous stone that can be kicked without damage, as it is formed by two solid, dovetailed, superimposed shells. Adaptable to indoor and outdoor use, it still causes amazement even today.

Mod 607

Model 607 embodies the close link between formal experimentation and technical innovation in Gino Sarfatti s work. This design stemmed from the need to house the new halogen source with its transformer. Two simple built-in elements: a flat disc acting as reflector and an inclined parallelepiped as base, which gives the lamp stability. The special crackled paint finish is another of the piece s original features. Timeless modernity, sobriety and elegance characterise this avant-garde article. IN FLOS re-issue it has a LED light source.

Mod 548

Model 548 has certain features of great interest in the history of light design: the directionable projector that directs the light towards a reflecting screen, the supporting bar, the balance between different weights. But it is the large head that makes it stand out: use of opaline methacrylate gives a sophisticated light diffusion effect. In FLOS re-issue, it has a LED source and optical switch with dimmer.

Miss Sissi

Table light designed by Philippe Starck who reinvented the classic bedside light model with materials and colours. An unmistakable design icon.

Miss K

A touch of female coquetry in ultra-contemporary style. Table lamp providing diffused lighting, well-known for its fluid, smooth line base and a ruled finish body surface.

Minikelvin LED

This is the ‘mini’ version of the legendary Kelvin Led table lamp designed by Antonio Citterio. The excellence embodied by the Led technology enclosed in the head of the traditional model has been relocated on a simple, compact body. 30 LEDs combined with a special chemically-etched diffuser provide a warm, soft, comfortable light, with no strong contrasts or dazzling. A special optical sensor is used to switch the lamp on/off and to adjust the brightness.

Signed by Konstantin Grcic and presented with the Gold Compass award, May Day is a lamp suitable for multiple uses and locations: it can be positioned on a table, placed on the floor, or suspended, thanks to the practical handle, which also acts as a cord reel.

LIGHT PHOTON

To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, Light Photon, design by Philippe Starck, is in production from September the 28th 2012 (Flos was founded the 28th of September 1962) in a limited edition series of 500 pieces.

Lampadina

A table lamp conceived by Achille Castiglioni for the opening of the Flos showroom in Turin in 1972, Lampadina reflects its name in its genial terseness. A large bulb lamp, partially satin finished to limit its reverberation, housed on a bulb holder with built-in switch and supported on a reel-like aluminium base, useful for rolling up excess cable.

GOLDMAN

"Banker’s lamps are one of the earliest kinds of electric lamps. They were made as early as the 1800s. Typically produced of a solid brass base and a green glass shade and functioned as accent or task lighting. Originally they were used by bankers, who worked long hours, looking at small numbers. They needed extra light on their desk to make their job a little easier. "Goldman”, named after an investment banking firm, designed as a step in the evolution of this traditional lamp, Injected with high technology and slick lines.” Ron Gilad

Gibigiana

Remembering a magical childhood game, in 1980 Achille Castiglioni invented Gibigiana. This lamp gets its name from the popular Lombard word for the children’s game of reflecting the sun’s light in the desired direction using a mirror. Inspired by this idea, Achille Castiglioni used a mirrored reflector to create an unusual lighting system that provides concentrated, directional light, ideal for activities requiring visual concentration in dimly lit or unlit settings, without disturbing other people in the room.

Gatto

Produced in two sizes, this iconic table light designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni was one of the first applications of Cocoon, a resin that, sprinkled around the steel wire structure, determines the shape of the light and diffuses a warm light.

D E-light

It was only a matter of time before Philippe Starck turned his mind to the popular and useful objects as the smartphone and tablet. And the resulting creation is a lamp that satisfies our daily need for information, entertainment and always-on connectivity. D’E-light has a radical, extremely functional design: the cool chromatic sophistication of the aluminium, the efficiency of the Led "Flat Panel” light source and the capacity to recharge various types of digital devices, makes D’E-light perfectly attuned to our contemporary habits.

"Two spheres just touch each other. One small, in a precious material, placed under the ‘shadow’ of the large one, in illuminated glass.” M. Anastassiades

CHAPO

When Alec Guinness, James Stewart and Fred Astaire got home in the evening, with a sharp and elegant gesture they would throw their hat onto anything within reach. So why not a lamp? Philippe Starck Throwing one’s hat onto a stand is a seductive and slightly swankering masculine gesture from bygone times. It has an irreverent and retro charm reminiscent of a cinematographic image that is an inescapable part of our visual baggage. All this underlies the Chapo table lamp, a playful gesture that becomes a three-dimensional and theatrical object, a lamp whose style, character and shape can change depending on the hat that is placed on top of it.
